Preliminary task evaluation (film)

1. for my preliminary task, i had worked with Dan Miller and Bradley Cooke. we had managed the task between us by each doing our contribution to the piece. we did this with Bradley doing the filming, me sorting out angle shots and what shots would make the film more effective and finally, Dan did the editing on his Mac computer.

2. During the stage of making the storyboard. the 3 of us decided that we wanted to have more of an arguement than a conversation. at this point we hadn't figured out what to have a conversation about, then during the filming after school, i had some food, and we had quickly decided that we should have an arguement involving food.

3. firstly, the technology that we had used for this piece was the camera. but we also used the tripod so that we could have done the close up of the doorhandle. we had also used Dan's Mac to do the editing of our short piece to cut our the parts where Bradley says 'go' as a signal to start filming. finally we used the 'Garage band' program on the mac so that we could use our own music in our piece.

4.
5. the conventions that we had used in our piece was that the music sort of went with the film. for example, when a slow piece came up, we had decided to use slow music at that point. we also used some of the camera work effectivly such as when the hand touches the doorhandle the audience know someone is going to walk through the door.

6. the preliminary task breaks the rule of using the 180 degree angle as this is not shown in our piece. at the part of filming we had forgotten to have added this rule to our piece.

7. for mise-en-scene, we had used some to the props that we needed in our piece. for example, we needed to have some of the chocolate fingers so that the audience would know what the arguement is about. for the set, we needed to have a room which no-one was in. this would have made the filming easier for us as there wasn't anyone to distract us and would also be a quiet place so that we could have an arguement.

8. during the piece, there is a sense of the enigma code as the audience see Dan walking and me waiting for him. this is to make the audience wonder how these 2 people are connected to each other. there is also a sense of a storyline in this piece of the 2 people falling out with each other.

9. i think that our piece was a good one as we had acheived most of aims, such as the door shot. if i did this task again i would change it to an arguement about a more serious matter as i think that an arguement about a biscuit seems to be a bit comical to me. i would also include the 180 degree rule as i belive it would make the piece more effective.

10. during this task i have learnt about some of the camera shots to make a short film interesting. i have learnt about the 180 degree rule and what it is. i think that this was an excellent task to do as it has helped me understand what to do if i was to make a film at the end of the year.

Preliminary task evaluation

1. For the preliminary task, i worked with Bradley Cooke and Dan Miller. we had managed the task between the 3 of us by each giving different ideas of how we should have done the task. we also managed the task by each having our own roles to do, for example, Bradley did most of the filming while Dan did most of the editing.

2. For the task, my group and i decided that we wanted more of an arguement than a convesation. we knew that we needed a close-up of a door handle and shot from the other side of the door, so we used tha as a starting point to decide what to do before and after these shots. for the plan we also had a short storyboard with all the camera shots that we were going to do for our task, we hadn't got any words in the storyboard so we hadn't got any idea what to have an arguement about.

Planning and taking photo's (magazine cover)

the plan that i had for my magazine cover would have been based on music inside the college, i had designed a cover with a picture of a man holding a guitar looking up at the camera for my mid shot, after a while i had decided to change the theme of my magazine to skateboarding and blading, i had made this decision because i felt like i wanted to do something different than the rest of the class. who most would have done music or sports.

for my first photo, i had gotten my friend, Beau Green to come round to my house with his skateboard. i wanted him to be standing sideways so that the skateboard would be easier to see, i also wanted him to turn his head to the camera as i had thought that this would show some attitude for the magazine cover.the colours of his jacket and skateboard had inspired me as i thought that these three colours together could look quite striking.

as for my second photo, i had wanted to do an action shot of my friend doing a trick on his board, i had thought that if i had done this it would make it look more appealing to the reader. i would use this photo for the contents page my friend's face cannot be seen very well.

Preliminary task

for our preliminary task, we had to do a short piece of a convesation, we had to have an extreme close up of the door handle, and a shot of the door being opened from the other side. we also needed to have an overshoulder shot of the two people having a conversation. i was in a group with Dan and Bradley, for our storyboard we had decided to have a person running down down a corridor so that it looked like he was late for a meeting.

During the lesson we had decided to start filming outside the english block as we could get a good high shot from some stairs, which we did. we had also done a low shot of Dan walking towards the camera and stepping over it. at the end of the lesson hadn't recorded all thay we needed, so we decided that we would stay afterschool the next day. the next day we had decided to start the whole thing all over again as we could make the piece better as there would be no people around. we had a few problems during some of the shots in the corridors as some people were walking out infront of the camera which we didn't want. when we did all the corridor shot, we had found a room that we could use for our conversation. we had done quite a few shots that we thought would be inappropriate as they contained swearwords in them. we also had a problem where when we did a shot, we would burst out laughing while the camera was still recording, but we could edit these parts of the shot. for a conversation, we had no idea what to do it on, then we had decided to do more of an arguement rather than a convesation about some biscuits that i hads brought in. after an agreement of using biscuits for a conversation, we decided to call this piece 'the cookie crumbles'.

during the editing we had to use a computer program to make our own music to use in our piece, we had decided for our piece we had done some techno-like music for the beginning to give the viewer the idea that this was not a serious peice. later we added a slow like sound that had a more serious feeling to it to give the viewer the idea that this has become a serious conversation.

preliminary practice

For my preliminary practice, Dan, Bradley and me had decided to do a short film about a stalker. we hadn't really got a reason for doing this stalker idea as the whole point of the practice was to learn how to use the camera. for the start of the exercise, we had decided that Dan and i would be in the film as Bradley was filming. this didn't mean that only Bradley got to use the camera as Dan and I got to see how to use it.

we had decided to do the film outside of Auburn place as we thought that it wouldn't be that crowded in the bottom floor of the building. the first shot that we had done was a high shot of Dan walking in Auburn place, followed by me. then we did some more of the following just outside Auburn place. we had a few problems here as we needed the area to be clear of students, we also had a problem as we were debating if i was too far away from Dan so you couldn't see me as this shot was a close up of Dan, but we wanted the audience to see me in the background. with the chase sequence we had to do quite a few times, firstly it was because the area had become crowded so that we had to wait for everyone to get out of the way. another problem that we had during this was that i didn't want to run infront of the camera. we had done a few shots of me powerwalking but we decided that the shots didn't look good enough so i had then decided to run during the last shot of the preliminary practice.

During the editing we had decided to have some music in the whole thing. we had done some editing where one of the shots was some quick editing to match some of the music in the piece. we had a very long part at the start where it just said the title, we needed to shorten the time it had the title showing up. we had a few things in the piece where it went from one shot to another but made the piece look like a book that we had decided would be inappropriate. finally we had some credits at the end to show who did what, we had a problem to begin with as the credits went too fast to read.
