Editing techniques - 2012 trailer

the first shot of this trailer is of the fim company columba, this is to inform the audience which company were responsible for making this film. the editing technique that is used is a fade to some lettering, the slow editing technique may be used to create tension or to make the audience eager about what their about to see. also the lettering is an incomplete sentence which makes the audience want to read the rest of the sentence. there is then another slow edit to a shot of some old ruins which sets out part of the story and also connotates that these ruins and lettering are related. there is then another fade out to some more lettering saying 'warned us' which connotates that there is some tragedy will happen in the story, it also involves the audience aswell as the lettering is directed at the audience. there is then another fade to a shot of the world which makes the audience seem powerful by looking over the earth. the shot is then edited to a shot of a landscape of trees and some lettering. the background of the trees then goes to a shot of an eclipes, with only 2 words of the lettering showing, this could be a freeze frame with the lettering so that the audience focus on those words.

there are then a few shots with an effect to look like a television. at the end of each shot is an editing technique that makes the shots seem as though they are changing channels on the television. all of the shots are non-continuity editing which crates an enigma code so the audience will want to know what it going on. there is one shot of a statue of Christ, with the arms falling off, this may connote that God is behind the devastation.

After the television sequence there is a shot of a man and his boy in a car talking, as this shot is longer that others it connotes that these are the main characters in the film. suddenly the 2 characters look up and the audience are shown what the characters are looking at, this is the non-diegetic gaze as the character is looking at something else in the trailer. the shots then keep cutting from the man in the car to whats going on outside the car. after there is a quick shot of another road being destroyed, this links to the shots of the man in the car. there are quick shots of whats going on all over the city. after is a long shot of a chapel and a priest looking up, the audience are then shown what this priest is looking at, which is a painting of God and a man joining hands. the shot shows a crack betwen the hands which connotes that God has abandoned the human race. straight after is a long shot of the same chapel falling down which also connotes of Gods abandoning of humans. there is then a quick shot of some text informing the audience who the director of the film is and to get the audience to focus on this text. there is then some more text to inform the audience what other films this director has made, so that when the audience read this and liked the other films, the audience will watch this film.

there are then a few shots of groups of people walking, there are then similar shots happening from different countries. this connotes that the devistation is global.there are then a few more shots of wrecked cities and ships with a plane flying past. after is a shot of the same man from the car which connotes that this man is the main character. there is then a shot of his family. all the shots are faded into another which gives the feel of slowing down the editing. the next few shots are of what look like an underground facility with large groups of people running to it. there is then a shot for a few seconds of a man in a suit which connotes that he is an important man in the film.

the next shot is of the main character driving a car out of a plane, the editing technique here is match-on-action as we see the car going out of the plane to a shot of the car driving away from the plane. there are then some quick editing shots of a plane flying through a crumbling city. there is a shot of the plane flying towards the camera then a quick edit to show the audience where the plane is going. there is then some more text saying 'the end' which creates an enigma code so the audience want to know what the rest of the sentence says. the audience then see a few more shots of devastation until there is the rest of the sentence saying 'is just the beginning'.

the next shot are quick editing techniques to give the feeling of speed and excitment of water flooding an aeroplane, and some more quick editing of all thats going on inside the plane to give the feeling of horror. there is then a shot of two hands reaching out for eachother quickly fading away. the fade last for about an second until there is a high shot of a ship tipping over due to a wave, this shot makes the audience feel powerful over the ship. the shot is long enough to give the audience time of focus on the ship tipping over. there is then a low shot of the ship moving towards the camera. the audience now feel that the ship is more powerful that them and is about to fall onto the viewer. as there is a few shots of this hip falling onto land, it connotes that this is an important part of the film.

there is then some more shots of the main character and his family hugging each other which may connote that the family is going to split up as one of the children is wearing a life jacket. there is then a moving shape with the word 'apocalypse' as the shapes move it forms the tiltle of the film as '2012'. there is some text informing the audience when the film is out, and then demands the audience to 'find out the truth' finally there is some more text on the film to inform the audience about it, such as the actors and director of the film.

the film has 2 well known actors such as Robert Downey Jr and Jamie Foxx. the director then beleives that the fans of these actors will watch the film just because they are in it.

potential colour schemes

here i have some colour schemes that i'm thinking of using in my magazine cover. i quite like the bold and bright colours as i think that it will look more like a teenagers magazine. also the style of the colours not going together makes the magazine more messy which could be linked to teenagers. i like the top colour scheme the most as the colours do go together and could look striking if the layout of colours is set right.
